How to unpack abrasive belts without damaging them

A closed-loop abrasive packed in folds needs careful handling. The official video, titled “How to Remove Abrasive Sleeves from the Box”, shows the protective packaging and the folded format being opened. This guide covers unpacking and unfolding, not installation on a machine.

Before accessing the machine, stop, isolate and make it safe according to the manufacturer’s manual and company procedures. The video illustrates one example, not a procedure for all buffing machines. Clamping, tensioning, working direction, guards and restarting are machine-specific.

Steps shown in the video

  1. Observe the way the abrasive is folded and protected in its packaging before opening it.
  2. Release the material from its protective wrapper while supporting it, and place it on a work surface as shown.
  3. Use both hands to guide the loops open without pulling from one edge or forcing a fold.
  4. Unfold the abrasive progressively, following its shape. Check the backing, edges, abrasive face and joint before taking it to the machine.

Handling and checks

Opening the loops is the delicate stage: support the material and avoid crushing the folds. If there are cuts, tears, deformation or doubts about the joint, do not install it; contact CARM.
